Meet Mrs. Reiter

Hello! My name is Mrs. Rachel Reiter and I am the director of choirs at Northern Lehigh Middle School and High School. I began my full time teaching career in August 2007 after a year of substitute teaching. During the 2007-2008 school year, I taught middle school and high school choir and middle school general music for Pittsylvania County Schools in Ringgold, VA. Since August 2008, I have had the privilege of directing the choirs at Northern Lehigh Middle School and High School.

I was born and raised in North Central PA and grew up in the small town of Jersey Shore. Yes, that's Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania. If you are curious as to how a town that is a 4 hour drive from the New Jersey Shore got its name, please scroll to the bottom of this page for the story. I currently live in Lansdale, PA with my husband,  Joe, who works as a statistical programmer.

I graduated magna cum laude from Lycoming College in 2006, where I earned my B.A. in Music with a vocal concentration. I have since earned graduate credits through the University of the Arts.

The story of how Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania got its name:

According to Wikipedia, which sourced its writings from Thomas W. Lloyd and John Franklin Meginness in Chapter XXVIII of the book History of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, originally published in 1892:

"Jersey Shore was originally named Waynesburg by the two brothers, Reuben and Jeremiah Manning, who laid out the town circa 1785. Around the time that this was happening, a settlement arose on the eastern side of the West Branch Susquehanna River (Nippenose Township), opposite Waynesburg. A rivalry developed between the two settlements, and those on the eastern shore began referring to the settlement on the western shore as the "Jersey Shore," because the Manning family had relocated from New Jersey. The nickname became so fixed that in 1826 the original name of Waynesburg was officially abandoned and changed to Jersey Shore."
